Big Sur, California, USA · Pacific Suite · Cliffside Ocean Views
One of the most iconic nature retreats in the United States — Post Ranch Inn sits 1,200 feet above the Pacific on the cliffs of Big Sur. Organic architecture of redwood, glass, and stone blends into the landscape; every Pacific Suite curves around a full arc of ocean glass. Three MICHELIN Keys. Wine Spectator Grand Award. The only hotel in Monterey County with MICHELIN Three Keys.
Post Ranch Inn was conceived by architect Mickey Muennig and opened in 1992 on 100 acres of Big Sur cliffside. Every structure was built to leave no tree removed and no natural contour disturbed. The result is a collection of 39 rooms and private houses — each one either cantilevered over the cliff, earth-sheltered into the hillside, or elevated on tree house stilts — that feel less like hotel rooms and more like private observatories for the Pacific. The property holds Three MICHELIN Keys and is one of only 16 hotels in the United States to receive the distinction.
The Pacific Suite is a curved room with glass walls forming a complete arc around the ocean view. The bedroom, living room, outdoor soaking tub, and walk-in shower all face the same unbroken Pacific horizon. A wood-burning fireplace anchors the interior. The complimentary minibar is stocked daily with organic snacks, local wine, craft beer, and spring water. Every room at Post Ranch Inn is intentionally television-free.
Sierra Mar restaurant sits directly on the cliff edge with floor-to-ceiling glass on three sides. The chef sources daily from the on-site organic garden and neighbouring coastal farms. The breakfast buffet — complimentary for hotel guests — includes fresh eggs from the property hens, baked goods, and a build-your-own trail mix station, all eaten with a 180-degree view of the Pacific. Dinner is a farm-driven tasting menu with pairings from the Wine Spectator Grand Award cellar.
The Pacific Suite occupies a curved single room in which the arced glass wall forms a continuous ocean window from the bedroom through the living room to the outdoor soaking tub on the private deck. Inside, a wood-burning fireplace, hand-woven textiles, and reclaimed redwood panelling ground the space in the Big Sur landscape. The suite features a walk-in shower with Pacific views, king-size bed with organic cotton linens, and a complimentary daily-stocked minibar with local wines.
Post Ranch Inn has two heated infinity edge basking pools — the Jade Pool beside Sierra Mar and the Meditation Pool at the north end of the property — both overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The spa offers organic coastal treatments including Pacific seaweed wraps, redwood bark exfoliation, and couples massage in rooms with ocean views. Complimentary activities include morning yoga, guided forest bathing along the redwood trails, and nightly astronomy sessions.
Sierra Mar occupies a cliff-edge building with floor-to-ceiling glass on three sides, looking out over the Big Sur coastline and Pacific Ocean. The breakfast buffet is complimentary for all hotel guests: fresh eggs from the property hens, seasonal fruit, baked goods, and the signature blend-your-own trail mix station, served with coffee and ocean views. Lunch is available daily, and dinner is a farm-driven four-course tasting menu that changes every evening based on the harvest from the on-site kitchen garden.
The wine list holds a Wine Spectator Grand Award — among fewer than 100 restaurants in the world to hold the distinction — with over 3,500 selections. The sommelier team leads private cellar tours and wine education sessions as a complimentary guest experience. The kitchen garden produces over 60 varieties of herbs, vegetables, and edible flowers, all harvested the same morning they are served.
