Four Seasons Bali at Sayan is built into the steep hillside above the sacred Ayung River in the Sayan Valley, west of Ubud. The resort was designed by architect John Heah and opened in 1998 as one of the most architecturally distinctive hotels in Southeast Asia: an elliptical building with curved balconies cascading down the hillside, topped by an infinity-edge lotus pond floating at rooftop level. The arrival experience is unique — guests cross a wooden footbridge above the jungle canopy to enter the resort at the lotus pond level, before descending into the hillside below.

The villas are set into the hillside below the resort structure, surrounded by tropical gardens, rice terraces, and the sounds of the Ayung River far below. Each One-Bedroom Villa features a private infinity pool overlooking the river valley, intricately carved Balinese wood panels, locally sourced shells, traditional ikat fabric, and a dedicated meditation area. The resort includes two swimming pools set into the hillside with Ayung River views, a Sacred River Spa, and the Sokasi riverside cooking school.

The Sacred River Spa at Four Seasons Sayan is one of the most celebrated spa experiences in Bali — treatments inspired by Balinese healing traditions, using medicinal herbs, volcanic ash, and local botanicals in an open-air spa pavilion above the jungle. The resort's cultural programme includes full moon purnama yoga sessions at the lotus pond, Megibung traditional communal Balinese dining events, private river purification rituals at the Ayung River below, and Balinese cooking classes at the Sokasi riverside kitchen.

Dining & Flavours

Ayung Terrace & Megibung
Indonesian Archipelago Cuisine · Treetop Views · Balinese Tradition

Ayung Terrace is the resort's main restaurant, perched in the treetops above the Sayan Valley with the jungle canopy and the distant Ayung River visible below. Chef Suta presents dishes from across the Indonesian archipelago — elevated traditional flavours from Javanese, Balinese, Sumatran, and other regional cooking traditions, using locally sourced ingredients and organic produce from the resort's gardens. The setting is one of the most atmospheric restaurant environments in Bali.

Megibung is one of the resort's most celebrated dining experiences — inspired by the ancient Balinese communal feast ritual, Megibung involves a shared table of dishes placed at the centre of the group, in the traditional manner of Balinese royal communal dining. The Riverside lower deck offers creative al fresco dining by the river's edge. The floating breakfast in the private villa pool is a Three-course breakfast served on a floating tray, drifting across the pool surface while the sounds of the jungle and the river below fill the morning air.
