Fogo Island Inn was built on the rocky coast of Fogo Island, Newfoundland, and opened in 2013. It was designed by the Fogo Island-born architect Todd Saunders — a structure on stilts that rises from the rocky shoreline like an outgrowth of the island itself. The inn was conceived by Zita Cobb, who grew up on Fogo Island, left to make a career in Silicon Valley, and returned to invest everything she had made back into her home island. Fogo Island Inn is a community-owned social business: 100% of its operating surpluses are reinvested into the Fogo Island community.

The 29 rooms and suites — all with floor-to-ceiling ocean views — are furnished with locally handmade furniture and quilts produced by the quilters of Fogo Island and its surrounding communities. The architecture draws on the vernacular building tradition of Newfoundland: bright colours, simple geometries, and a deep relationship with the sea. The inn was awarded Relais & Châteaux membership and three Michelin Keys in 2025, placing it among the most celebrated hotels on earth.

Fogo Island is one of the last places on earth to experience the great Labrador Sea icebergs at close range — mountains of freshwater ice calved from Greenland's glaciers, floating south through the iceberg alley off Newfoundland in April, May, and June. The inn operates boats for iceberg and whale watching, guided island orientation tours, hiking, cycling, bushcraft, and foraging. All meals are included in the rate — three daily meals plus afternoon tea, prepared with fish, seafood, and produce from the island and the surrounding waters.

Accommodation

The Corner Suite
Floor-to-Ceiling Ocean Views · Handmade Quilts · Newfoundland Design

The Corner Suite at Fogo Island Inn has floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides, framing panoramic views of the North Atlantic Ocean and the rocky coastline of Fogo Island. The room features a handmade quilt by the quilters of the island's surrounding communities — each quilt a one-of-a-kind piece of local textile art. The furniture is designed by Donna Wilson and produced locally. The inn uses no mass-produced elements: every room is a collaboration between contemporary design and Newfoundland craft.

All 29 rooms include full-board service — three daily meals, afternoon tea, and all guided excursions. Rooftop hot tubs with panoramic ocean views are available to all guests. The inn's guest hosts — local islanders who grew up on Fogo — provide orientation tours, share stories, and guide every aspect of the island experience. The inn is closed during transition seasons; check current availability.

Dining & Flavours

The Dining Room & The Shed
Newfoundland Cuisine · Local Fish & Seafood · Full Board

All meals at Fogo Island Inn are included in the rate. The dining room serves three meals daily from a menu rooted in the culinary tradition of outport Newfoundland — fresh-caught cod, crab, lobster and shrimp from local fishermen, foraged greens and berries from the island, preserved and fermented vegetables through the winter season, and moose from the surrounding landscape. The kitchen maintains relationships with the planters, fishers, hunters, and foragers who supply it. Every dish tells a story of Fogo Island's relationship with the North Atlantic.

The Shed is a seasonal outdoor dining venue where crab and lobster suppers are served on the waterfront. Afternoon tea is provided daily in the common rooms. The tea room, with its handcrafted interior and ocean views, is one of the most intimate spaces in the inn. Cocktails and local spirits are available in the bar. The full beverage programme is separate from the food inclusions.

Why Fogo Island Inn

The Most Celebrated Inn in the World — Built on a Rock in the North Atlantic, Owned by a Community

Fogo Island Inn is a Michelin 3-Key hotel and Relais & Châteaux member. Its operating surpluses — 100% of them — go back to the community of Fogo Island. The architect grew up on the island. The quilts are made by islanders. The fish is caught by local fishermen. The icebergs are Greenland glaciers floating past the door in spring. The inn was built to save a community that was in danger of disappearing. It may be the most meaningful hotel on earth.
