Burgenstock Resort opened on the Burgenberg mountain ridge in 1873, and for more than a century it was the preferred retreat of European royalty and Hollywood celebrities. Audrey Hepburn spent her honeymoon here. A nine-year, CHF 550 million renovation completed in 2017 created one of the most ambitious Swiss luxury resorts of the modern era — four hotels, ten restaurants, two full spas, an alpine golf course, and the 10,000-square-metre Alpine Spa overlooking the lake. In 2025, the resort holds Three MICHELIN Keys.
The Rock Suite is a cliffside room in the Contemporary wing with a gas-lit fireplace that opens on both sides, dividing the lounge from the square Jacuzzi bath. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame an uninterrupted panorama of Lake Lucerne and the surrounding Alps. The funicular from the Burgenstock pier on Lake Lucerne delivers guests directly into the hotel lobby — the original 1888 funicular faithfully reproduced in the 2017 renovation.
The Alpine Spa is the largest hotel spa in Switzerland. The outdoor infinity pool is cantilevered over the lake at 35 degrees year-round. Four panoramic saunas, a hammam, an ice room, a salt cave, a cold plunge pool, and a floating pool — all with lake views. Fifteen treatment rooms. A private spa suite includes a personal sauna, Jacuzzi, treatment room, and lounge. Verbena Restaurant serves health-conscious Swiss alpine cuisine with low-sodium, farm-to-table philosophy.
The Rock Suite occupies a cliffside position in the Contemporary wing with panoramic lake views on three sides. A gas-lit fireplace opens on both sides, dividing the lounge area from the square Jacuzzi bathtub. Teak accents, crisp linens, and minimal design in calming neutral tones allow the Lake Lucerne panorama to dominate. A terrace overlooks the lake and the Rigi and Pilatus peaks.
The Alpine Spa is a three-minute walk from the suite, with complimentary access for all hotel guests: outdoor infinity pool at 35 degrees, indoor pool with panoramic windows, four saunas, hammam, ice room, salt cave, cold plunge, and floating pool. Fifteen treatment rooms. Private spa suites available for two-hour private experiences with champagne and lake views.
Verbena Restaurant is the health-conscious fine dining venue in the Waldhotel, serving farm-to-table Swiss alpine cuisine designed by Culinary Director Mike Wehrle. The menu champions simple vegetables and herbs from the resort gardens, with a low-sodium philosophy. The Oak Grill serves fresh Lake Lucerne fish and wood-fired meats. Ten restaurants, bars, and lounges in total across the resort.
The resort offers Spices Kitchen for pan-Asian cuisine, Parisa for Persian gastronomy with lake views, and Brasserie Ritzcoffier for French classics. The Lakeview Bar and Cigar Lounge is one of the most scenic cocktail venues in Switzerland. Taverne 1879 serves Swiss fondue in a historic farmhouse setting on the resort.
