Badrutt's Palace Hotel opened in 1896 on a bluff above Lake St Moritz, conceived by Caspar Badrutt whose father Johannes had invented alpine winter tourism a generation earlier. The hotel is privately owned and has remained under the Badrutt family or close associates ever since. Gothic-Revival facades with Tudor arches, filigree wood walls, Renaissance coffered ceilings, and Neo-Baroque ceiling paintings define the public rooms. Every guest is transferred from the train station in a vintage Rolls Royce gifted by Queen Elizabeth II. In 2025, the new Serlas Wing — designed by Italian architect Antonio Citterio and Loro Piana Interiors — added 25 rooms including suites and a five-bedroom penthouse.

The Palace Suite features an Italian marble bathroom, a spacious bedroom and drawing room, a kitchenette, and a private balcony overlooking Lake St Moritz. Personalized butler service is included. The Palace Wellness spa — rebuilt with a CHF 70 million investment — has an indoor infinity pool, an outdoor pool (the largest in St Moritz, 2024, heated with lake water), saunas, steam rooms, Jacuzzis, and 10 treatment rooms. The outdoor pool in winter is described by guests as simply unforgettable: steaming water against a backdrop of snow-covered peaks.

In winter, three ski areas are accessible: Corviglia (155km above the town), Corvatsch (cable car across the valley), and Diavolezza-Lagalb, all linked by the local ski bus included with the lift pass. The 11 restaurants in winter range from Matsuhisa by Nobu at La Coupole to the legendary Chesa Veglia farmhouse (purchased 1935), Le Restaurant with its crystal chandeliers and lake views, and King's Social House by Jason Atherton. The 30,000-bottle wine cellar hosts private sommelier-guided tastings beginning with Krug.

Accommodation

The Palace Suite
Lake View · Butler Service · Italian Marble

The Palace Suite is a uniquely designed one-bedroom suite with expansive living quarters, a spacious bedroom, an Italian marble bathroom, a separate drawing room, a kitchenette, and a private balcony overlooking Lake St Moritz. Large balcony doors and windows flood the suite with high-altitude Engadin sunlight. Personalized butler service is included throughout the stay, and top-shelf spirits are complimentary in all suites. The suite can be connected to additional rooms for up to five-bedroom configurations.

The Palace Wellness complex is a short walk through the hotel: indoor infinity pool, the new outdoor pool (2024, CHF 70M renovation), saunas, steam rooms, a Jacuzzi, and 10 light-filled treatment rooms using organic botanicals. The three-kilometre walk to Corviglia takes around 15 minutes, or the hotel's ski shuttle serves all three ski areas. The new Serlas Wing (2025), connected via underground tunnel, adds 25 rooms and a five-bedroom penthouse by Antonio Citterio.

Le Restaurant & Matsuhisa by Nobu
11 Restaurants · 30,000-Bottle Wine Cellar

Le Restaurant is the grand dame of St Moritz dining — candlelight, white tablecloths, crystal chandeliers, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Lake St Moritz. Breakfast is served each morning with a live harpist. Matsuhisa by Nobu at La Coupole brings the iconic Nobu open kitchen to the Belle Epoque dining room. King's Social House by Jason Atherton offers modern bistro fare for sharing. The Chesa Veglia farmhouse (1935) houses Pizzeria Heuboden and Le Relais in one of Switzerland's most historic restaurant buildings.

The Grand Hall is the legendary living room of St Moritz — afternoon tea, a full menu, and the iconic tall windows with lake views. The Renaissance Bar, helmed by Matteo Oddo, stocks rediscovered spirits from the 1870s in a carefully curated cocktail programme. The wine cellar holds 30,000 bottles; private sommelier-guided tastings begin with Krug. The hotel's signature gourmet safari — champagne in the wine cellar, Nobu starters, private room at Le Relais, dessert with the pastry chef — is an unmissable evening.

Why Badrutt's Palace Hotel

The Birthplace of Winter Tourism — Above Lake St Moritz Since 1896

Johannes Badrutt invented alpine winter tourism in St Moritz in 1864. His son Caspar opened Badrutt's Palace in 1896. For 129 years, every generation of the global luxury traveller has passed through Le Grand Hall: royals, Coco Chanel, Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Marlene Dietrich, and today's jet set. The vintage Rolls Royce gifted by Queen Elizabeth II still collects guests from the station. The 2024 outdoor pool — now the largest in St Moritz, heated with lake water — and the 2025 Serlas Wing by Antonio Citterio confirm that the hotel still sets the benchmark. Eleven restaurants, 30,000 bottles in the wine cellar, and a frozen lake for horse carriage rides in winter.
